As individuals we can make a big difference. The hardest thing to realise is that every single piece of plastic you have thrown away is still on this earth today. That's A LOT of plastic and you are only one person. But, if we can produce that much, surely we can save just as much.
Challenge yourself to incorporate one of the below things into your life and feel proud knowing that you are making a difference no matter how small.
Here are five CHEAP ways to start transitioning to zero waste.
1. Say no to straws
You don’t have to buy anything for this one - Simply don’t use one! What happened to just drinking straight from the cup? If you prefer to use straws, there are stainless steel, glass and bamboo options around. All you have to do is keep it with you for when you need it.
You can purchase a four pack of stainless steel straws from the Warehouse for only $6!
2. Bring your own cutlery
This may seem a little weird, but you can actually just carry around a knife and fork from your kitchen instead of using plastic utensils. This is a great way to stop using single use utensils and you just wash them when you get home!
3. Make your lunch at home
You don’t have to buy lunch out everyday, it’s cheaper and probably healthier to just make it at home. This way you can use your own reusable containers and it’s much easier to limit the amount of plastic used in food preparation and when you eat.
4. Use your own bags
This is a very popular way to reduce your waste at the moment. You don’t have to buy fancy bags, just reuse old tote bags or strong plastic bags that you have lying around at home.
5. Gradually replace toiletries
It’s easy to want to throw away everything straight away and replace it with more eco friendly products, however this defeats the purpose. It’s expensive but also wasteful - you may as well finish what you have and replace items gradually as you run out. For example the next time you need a new toothbrush, opt for a more sustainable option such as bamboo!
Hopefully these ideas gave you some inspiration, good luck in your environmental journey!
